Tis The Season of Media Bloodletting
Tis the season of brutal bloodletting in journalism. Right before the holidays, which makes it even worse. The pay, compared to other fields, is not that great; the criticism is almost universal; the self-examination is — always — withering. And, on top of all that, are talks of strikes:
Why would anyone want to be in media right now?
I don’t know. But as I have always told journos, when asked for advice, that it is very, very important, always, to be your own brand. That is what this newsletter is. This is advice I have always followed and freely give out. Media — and journalism — is brutal. Look out for yourself in this business, especially at the end of a rough year in the profession.
